What's Best for Children?

Chances are that you have visited this website because you and your children's other parent are not living together. You deeply love your child and you probably share the same hope, along with millions of other loving parents who live apart, that you can still give your children what they need to grow up strong, healthy, and happy.

You probably have already heard that after separation, children can do well if they have both parents in their lives. Often, this is taken to mean that each parent has a substantial amount of parenting time and that they share decision making. But while these are important, these alone won't help children thrive. How well children manage can depend more on other things parents do or don't do. For example, hard feelings between parents, arguments, disrespectful behavior---especially when children observe or hear them---are very toxic for children (not to mention for the parents). This is true whether or not parents share parenting time and decisions. There are other influences of course, like personalities, finances, neighborhoods, living conditions, just to mention a few, but it is how well you parent and how well you coparent that are at the top of the list. Luckily, these are all things many parents can do, build up, repair, or learn! The Mom's House, Dad's House books and their companion, The CoParenting Toolkit were written exactly for this purpose. But, there may come a time when talking to friends and reading books are not enough. Then it's time to find a consultant, counselor, therapist, or mediator
